A Lokal Gift Guide - Collingwood Edition

WORDS: Stef Richardson | PHOTOS: Alyssa Joline

Time to lokal the heck out of your holiday gifting. Maybe you’re ahead of the game and have been there done that or maybe you’re skipping prezzies this year and focusing on experiences + quality time. Whatever you’re doing this year, good on you! There is no “right way” to do-up the holidays but for me, it’s usually the good food + wonderful people that make the fondest of memories. However, in case you need to pick-up something for someone special, I’ve rounded up 10 items from around the Collingwood area that are on my love-it list all 365 days of the year. Tried and true, tasted and enjoyed, sipped and got tipsy type-o’love.

Local is better in all categories and if you’re looking to support someone close to home, these peeps deserve that love.

On that note…support ALL local businesses in the area, OK? This is just a simple list of items that I use on the daily slash love dearly and that I’d be happy to receive. Read on and find product details + links at the bottom of the blog.

  10. DIY - homemade nuts + boltz. Who doesn’t love some garlic and butter roasted cereal snacks? I’m addicted and the empty tupperware containers next to me will also tell you this.

3 cups of cheerios / 3 cups of froot loops / 3 cups of shreddies / 2 cups of lightly salted peanuts / 2 cups of pretzel sticks
1 cup of melted unsalted butter / 2 tsp garlic powder / 2 tsp onion powder
*cereal + peanut quantities can be adjusted. A little extra doesn’t hurt.

1. Mix cereal, pretzels and peanuts in a shallow pan and spread evenly (I use a black roasting pan).
2. Melt butter. Add garlic powder and onion powder; whisk well.
3. Pour over cereal mixture and toss until evenly coated.
4. Bake at 250°F for 2.5 hours while stirring frequently. Make sure to stir the bottom to avoid burning.
5. Let cool before enjoying!

Please note - The cereal will be a bit soft and soggy during the initial bake however over the baking period, the goods will firm up. Store in tupperware containers + enjoy!you will become addicted and yes, I know it’s weird to have froot loops but I’m all about that sweet n’ salty combo. My fam has been rockin’ this recipe since I was a wee babe. Store in tupperware containers + enjoy!

My favourite day of the month hands down is Christmas Eve. I wake up feeling jazzed to do my last minute grocery store shop (lol, I’m weird), singing “Wonderful Christmastime” and thinking about all of the bubbly and munchies I’ll be enjoying at my parents house in Meaford. Oh, and plenty of nuts and boltz to boot.

Happy Holidays!
